A beautiful antique circular 9 carat gold front and back sweetheart locket circa Victorian era. This lovely picture locket pendant is hand engraved with a flower basket to the front. The rear of the locket features further hand engraving of a swallow in flight framed by gracefully twisting branches and blossoming flowers all etched with intricate detailing. The swallow motif was popular in sweetheart jewellery and would often be gifted to a loved one. The notion behind this is that the swallow always returns to its nest serving as a reminder of a love shared and the promise of a safe return home. It opens at the side by inserting a fingernail into the groove and closes with a click. Inside are two original black and white photographs of a Victorian gentleman and lady. The locket comes complete with its own jump ring ready to be strung on your favourite chain.
Front and back lockets were popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras and as the name suggests, the back and front of the locket are gold but the rim, hinge, frames and other components are constructed of a gold plated base metal. In very good condition with minimal light wear and original frames and plastic photo covers. Stamped 9ct BK - FT to the rear. A wonderful timeless piece of keepsake jewellery which would make a lovely gift idea or addition to your jewellery collection.

Care Instructions
Chemicals and chlorine can damage jewellery. It is recommended that you remove it when using body care products, spraying perfume or hairspray, bathing, swimming and whilst doing housework.
Settings and stones can be damaged by accidentally striking the hand against a hard surface. It is best to remove rings when carrying out any manual work or gardening.
To clean your jewellery use tepid water and a few drops of mild soap, a soft jewellery brush or cloth.
Extra care should be taken with opal, turquoise and pearl as these are porous so soaking should be avoided. To clean wipe with a damp soft cloth and avoid extreme changes in temperature.
When you are not wearing your jewellery it is best stored away in a suitable jewellery box for safekeeping.
